Our mission is to celebrate and preserve our regions’ musical heritage in the only way it can be done: playing the tunes and passing them on from musician to musician. East Tennessee has rich roots in Irish and Scottish music, and they merged here with other influences and evolved into bluegrass and old time Appalachian genres. At Boyd’s Jig and Reel we celebrate our musical past, our present, and future. Come on down, bring your fiddle or instrument of your choice and join in. If you forget your instrument, there are plenty tuned up and ready to play from pianos to a double bass to a harp, and of course plenty of mandolins and fiddles. Don’t play? Not to worry. We have beer and food for the spectators!
ABOUT THE PUB:
Whether it be in the highlands of Scotland, the green plains of Ireland, or the rolling mountains of Appalachia, music and drink have always brought people together. Not much for big name celebrity bands, these cultures did, however, produce their fair share of musicians and singers. Each had received the songs of their heritage and could play them for hours with great skill entertaining and inspiring the locals and travellers. Their place of congregation was a public house, or pub, where any and all could come have a drink and listen in on the session. Boyd’s Jig & Reel in the Old City of Knoxville is such a place for all those who seek cold drink, warm conversation, and lively music.
This pub belongs to all players and listeners of this traditional art. So, come and enjoy the heritage of our cultures as we share and preserve it through drink and music.
WHAT IS A PUB SESSION?
“A pub session (seisúin in Irish Gaelic) refers to playing music and/or singing in the relaxed social setting of a local pub, in which the music-making is intermingled with the consumption of ale, stout, and beer and conversation. Performers sing and play traditional songs and tunes from the Irish, English and Scottish traditions, using instruments such as the fiddle, accordion, concertina, flute, tin whistle, uilleann pipes, tenor banjo, guitar, and bodhrán.” – Wikipedia

So come on down to Suttree’s and order yourself a pint of fine beer–or try several different flights to find your favorite! Our menu is always changing, so come often!
Growing up…my mom loved Watson’s Department Store…I mean loved it! It seemed as if every Saturday of my youth, was spent rummaging through the bargain-filled caverns of Watson’s Department Store on Market Square. We would all pile in the car and wait for the question…”Where are we headed?” We knew it was coming, and, as if we had any choice in the matter, our answer was invariably “Not Watson’s!” Then we’d all have a good laugh, and head straight downtown! Market Square definitely had a different vibe back then, but it was still a great place to gather with family and friends.
So…when the building you are sitting in became available, and we decided to put a new restaurant in it, the name was pretty much already decided. Call it destiny, a blast from the past, whatever you like…Not Watson’s was creating some pretty cool memories, long before we opened its doors as Market Square’s newest restaurant and watering hole. So why “not”? Eat…Drink…Enjoy!!
Just so you’ll know…at Not Watson’s Kitchen + Bar, we source the absolute best ingredients for all of our offerings, whether it’s food, beer, wine or cocktails. We provide all organic & farm to table products whenever possible…especially if they taste better! We buy local whenever and wherever it makes sense. Actually…some of what you are eating today was probably purchased from local, all-organic farmers, right here in Market Square. You should check out the Market Square Farmer’s Market every Wednesday and Saturday morning, May through November!
We are as committed as anyone we know (and we know a bunch of people!), to serving the best possible stuff, at the best possible price…every day we come to work. After all…if we aren’t proud of it…how can we expect you to eat it, drink it…or, hopefully, tell your friends about it? If you have any questions about what we use…or where we get it…don’t hesitate to ask. We might even give you a tour…if you’re truly committed…as long as you don’t mind wearing a hairnet and some slip resistant footwear!
